Hams Who Serve

It shall be our purpose to further amateur radio by serving the public; to promote technical knowledge, fraternalism, and individual operating proficiency; and to advance the general interest and welfare of amateur radio in the community. CARS has more than one hundred Thirty licensed hams, both young and old, who reflect a genuine willingness to serve their community through amateur radio operations.

To promote licensing of more hams, CARS also conducts bi-monthly VE sessions at the Independence Town Hall, centrally located in northeast Ohio. The sessions have drawn applicants from throughout the state. The experienced VE team, lead by Metro Sinko - W8MET, has helped license hundreds of hams over the past two decades in a courteous, and professionally conducted testing environment. Monthly meetings have included topics such as:

• National Weather Service and Cuyahoga County Skywarn tornado spotting session.
• What is PSK-31 and what programs to use to get on the air.
• How the Utility company tracks down local RFI problems in your neighborhood.
• Understanding electronic QSL card usage and LOTW.
• The latest Ham computer programs.
• Videos of DXpeditions and other subjects.
• Hands on building projects

In June, July & August, CARS moves our meeting location to the Brecksville Metro Park Reservation to promote a picnic like atmosphere. Members grill hotdogs and hamburgers at the pre-meeting cookout. The large field next to the meeting shelter can be used to demonstrate portable field operations and antenna design.

CARS also holds an annual Christmas Party with food and prizes in place of the December meeting.
